This is the final match of the Group E and there is nothing at stake except pride. Benfica has 4 points and they are guaranteed to finish 3rd and move on to the Europa League. AEK Athens has so far lost all their matches in the group and they will finish last. In the first meeting between the teams Benfica got their only win 2-3 but it was a bit lucky as their winning goal came from their only chance in the second half. AEK thus has some score to settle.

Benfica is in great form

Benfica has struggled this season as they were second favourites to go through from this Champions League group, but were clearly beaten by Bayern and Ajax for the top-2 spots. In the Portuguese primeira liga they are 4th currently 4 points behind leaders Porto despite only losing twice this season. They are currently on a really good run having won five of their last 6 games losing only to Bayern. They have also won their last 3 home games. The only match that they have failed to score at home this season was against Bayern (0-2). In all the other matches they have found the net at least once. In their 13 home games this season they have managed to keep a clean sheet only 5 times but two of those were in their last two games.

AEK has left poor November behind them

This group was too tough for AEK Athens as they have lost all their games so far conceding at least 2 goals in each game. At the same time they scored only in that loss to Benfica (2-3). All others they lost to nil.  They are not doing that well in the domestic Greek Super League either as they hare currently 4th but already 12 points behind leaders PAOK. November was especially bad for them as they only managed one draw and 4 defeats in all competitions scoring only once. Now that bad month seems to be behind them as they have won now twice in December scoring twice in both and keeping two clean sheets.

Scottish referee to give judgement

The referee for this match will be Scottish Bobby Madden to whom this will be the second Champions League match this season having presided in the Lokomotiv Moscow – Porto match earlier. Greek football fans will also know him from the AC Milan – Olympiakos game in the Europa League. He gave one red card and 5 yellows in the Lokomotiv – Porto game, but normally he does not give away too many cards. He averages this season 2.78 yellow cards per game and one red card per every 9 games.

Benfica Team News

Benfica will be without Eduardo Salvio who is injured. Ljubomir Fejsa and Jonas are also doubts.

AEK Team News

AEK will be without injured Alef and suspended Marko Livaja from this match.

With AEK struggling to find the net in this competition, Benfica to win to nil with 2.20 odds is worth a shot.
