Greek Football League Starts today – Season preview

Greek Football League Season preview

The Greek Football League is starting finally again and the sixteen teams will try their best to achieve their pre-season goals. As it always happens in the last years, the second division in Greece starts with a big delay, since most of the teams have no money and the organizing authority is struggling to find sponsorships for the league. This year there was an extra problem – which is not actually solved just postponed- to agree with the SuperLeague how many teams will qualify to the first division. Finally it was decided to begin the league with the agreement that the first team will be promoted to Super League and the second will qualify in a playoff game with the 13TH team of Super League.

Below is alphabetically the list of the teams.

  1. Aiginiakos
  2. Aititos Spata
  3. AO Chania – Kissamikos
  4. Apollon Larisa
  5. Apollon Pontou
  6. Doxa Dramas
  7. Ergotelis
  8. Iraklis
  9. Irodotos
  10. Karaiskakis
  11. Kerkyra
  12. Panachaiki
  13. Platanias
  14. Sparti
  15. Trikala
  16. Volos

Even though the differences between all the teams are not big, Iraklis ,Panachaiki, Kerkyra and Platanias are the big favourites to finish in the first 2 positions in the league.

Iraklis, one of the most historic teams in Greece, hired as coach Mr Alecos Vosniadis, and as general manager Mr Myroforidis. The last one is the most successful  general manager in the Football League as he has won 3 promotions to the Superleague in the last 3 years all with different teams. Biggest transfers for Iraklis were Silva Clayton, Mumin and Pasas who all of them are highly experienced in the Greek second tier.

Panachaiki is an other team who is going for promotion. Last year they finished third. The owner of the team – famous European Cup Winner with Greece- Kostas Katsouranis has the knowledge of how to build a solid team. Midfielder Israel Col and Forward Panagiotis Moraitis will be the key players this season.

Kerkyra and Platanias were both relegated last season from the Super League and are expected to fight back for the top 2 positions. Their advantage is that both teams have experienced players for this category.

Teams that can be surprises this season are Kissamikos and Trikala, but since only 2 teams are promoted they need to try more than 100% to achieve something like that.

Let’s hope this season to have a championship that will keep the interest of the fans till the last games.
